Home & community training & resources

Please work through the seven training videos below and related resources.

You may have already worked through the PARAS ward training. Delivery is different in PARAS home and community so please work through this training as well if you are covering both areas. We recommend as you work through each resource you save a copy to enable use. The training takes around two hours but can be done in small chunks. Once you have completed the training and started to deliver PARAS with stroke survivors, we have provided a self-evaluation and reflection tool to enable you to develop your skills.

1. Key components of PARAS

In this video Sarah describes the essential components of PARAS. For a summary of the components please download this document.

2. PARAS invite

In this video Sarah describes how to invite a stroke survivor to take part in PARAS. Please download a copy of the invite here. This can be displayed as a poster or given to a stroke survivor face-to-face or via email.

3. Part 1: Welcome & preparation

In this video Sarah describes how to deliver Part 1 of PARAS: Welcome and preparation. Please download the workbook to look through as Sarah describes the process. If you only need to use certain parts of the workbook individual sections can be downloaded from the resources page.

If stroke survivors are going to be undertaking moderate to high intensity physical activity, please make sure they do not have any contraindications to exercise.

4. Outcome measures

In this video Sarah describes the outcome measures that have been incorporated into PARAS.

Further information on the measures can be found below.

https://www.sralab.org/rehabilitation-measures/rivermead-mobility-index

https://sites.google.com/view/ipaq/home

https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/med/research/platform/wemwbs/

The Rivermead Mobility Index is scored out of 15 (higher score better mobility)

The Warwick and Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) is scored out of 14-70 (higher score better wellbeing).

The following excel sheet can be used to calculate a total score for activity across the week (Column X) or a category of activity (Column Y) by entering the information from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire into the blue Columns B-H.

Download the IPAQ scoring sheet here.

As a service you may use different outcome measures and if you feel these measures are achieving the same aim you do not need to increase burden by also doing the PARAS outcome measures.

5. Part 2: Activity selection, goal setting and action planning

In this video Sarah describes Part 2.

Stroke survivors will be supported to select an activity. We have provided a physical activity options template for services to store information on UK wide and local options (PA options).

Self-monitoring of activity is an important part of the action plan. We have created a resource for professionals on PA self-monitoring after stroke.

6. Part 3: Review

In this video Sarah describes how to deliver Part 3 reviewing progress.

Once your patient has been discharged from the ward PARAS home and community can be used to support goal setting in the home and community.

7. Behaviour change counselling techniques

In this video, Sarah describes the behaviour change counselling techniques that underpin the delivery of PARAS and enable person-centred communication.
